Ritz Paris

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, today’s post is all about staying at the Ritz in Paris. It was such an incredible hotel experience that I felt like it deserved its own post… plus I got so many DMs asking about how my stay was because other people were planning their Paris trips.

I spent a lot of time researching hotels in Paris but I kept coming back to the Ritz. I actually considered rebooking the Hôtel Providence, where I stayed during my last visit. I loved that hotel and so I knew I’d have a great experience there again… but I also wanted to try somewhere new and, especially, try a new neighborhood.

When we started planning the trip, it was pretty last minute (only the beginning of October), so many Airbnb options were already booked as were about 40% of hotels for the block of time we’d be there. I definitely want to stay in an apartment in the future, but for a longer stay when I want to feel more at home. You know? For five nights, I wanted all the amenities.

Once the Ritz was in the running, it seemed like the absolute best choice. Of course, I can’t say that it was better than any of the other hotels on my list because we didn’t experience any of the other hotels, but I can say that the experience was above and beyond any other hotel.

The RitzOur first interaction with the hotel was actually in the airport where we were picked up by someone from the hotel and whisked through an expedited customs process. At 8 am after flying all night and barely sleeping more than a wink, it felt like being handed the golden ticket.

Then we got into one of the hotel’s cars to drive into the city, where it felt like we got a mini-tour from a local. Our driver was wonderful and took us the more scenic route sharing little tidbits about the city.

The room itself was more divine than I could have imagined. It actually felt like we had more of an apartment than a hotel room. We had three closets to really unpack and settle in. (Unpacking is the very first thing I do when I get to a hotel room– it instantly makes you feel at home.)

Ritz Paris Hotel

The Ritz was once built to be one of the finest hotels in the world with famous guests like Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Coco Chanel (who actually lived in the hotel for over 30 years). It was shut down in 2012 to undergo a massive renovation and reopened in 2016.

All of the rooms are decorated in the most perfect Parisian fashion. My dream would be to stay in the Coco Chanel suite one day… but the regular rooms are more than fine for me, too 😉.

Paris

Every single detail was perfect. Literally, everything, whether it was the faucets in the bathroom (those swans!) or help from the bellhops, I was blown away. The concierge was also worth noting as exceptional– they provided us with the best restaurant recommendation (we were nervous because it had only been open for 13 days, but we needn’t be– it was delicious!) and helped us with every question we had. We, unfortunately, had not budgeted for the €12,000 helicopter ride they recommended for Normandy (😂), but hey, we at least knew it was an option.

Paris Hotel Recommendation

The Ritz served as a great home base for us; it’s right in the heart of the 1st Arrondissement. It was so easy to walk to many of the places we wanted to visit. (Our rule of thumb was that we walked anywhere under 35 minutes away… I always find that walking gives you the best feel for the city while traveling.) By the end of our stay, we knew which way to turn and had a great sense of where we were going without our phones.

Actually, I think that’s the worst part of staying there… you don’t really want to leave! I had read a review online warning that you shouldn’t stay there unless you didn’t mind going to Paris and not seeing Paris. I totally know what that reviewer meant within 10 minutes of being inside the hotel. You could easily spend the entire trip there– swimming in their pool, relaxing at the spa, snacking on the finest croissants… etc.

Our room rate came with breakfast every morning. We took our mornings slow, opting for a little extra rest (and the sun didn’t rise until 8 am anyway) and a long, leisurely breakfast. This sounds dramatic, but it was the best breakfast I’ve ever had. Perfect eggs and the most scrumptious French toast you can ever imagine. But, I mean, when a basket of pastries is placed in front of you, a great meal is pretty much guaranteed.

And the best little detail? Monogrammed pillows!

Carly-

Did the hotel comp your stay? If not, any tips on finding reduced rates? I’m seeing room start at over $1000/night – !!

Thanks. Unfortunately spending $8000+ on the hotel alone isn’t in the cards for me (saving for a home down payment!)

Can you please clarify if your stay was comped or you received a discount for your stay?

Do you recommend any cheaper options?? I just don’t know what “normal” 29 year old can afford to stay here! It’s about $1200 a night!?

Carly-

After your last trip you mentioned you couldn’t stomach spending $1k+ a night on a hotel. I agreed! What changed?!

During my search I just kept going back to the Ritz and I REALLY wanted to stay there

Caroline

Wow!!! I paid $1100 for my fall trip, and that was 7 nights in a hotel + the roundtrip flight + full coverage travel insurance. The hotel is right by Jardin du Luxembourg (one of my favorite neighborhoods!) This is to show my fellow blog readers that you can pull off a trip for this amount (without spending that same amount for one night in a hotel! Whew!!) 🙂

Alexandra, I do highly recommend it. I’ve stayed there 4x. The name is “Hotel des Mines” on Blvd St. Michel. I love their staff, rooms are always clean, rooms have safes, elevator, beds comfortable, perfect WiFi, room service breakfast, and excellent location. Above all, I have always felt safe. There is also a grocery store right next door, pharmacy right down the street. It’s an older hotel (and the pics definitely aren’t fully up to date), but I can’t recommend it more highly. Another note – I always book through Expedia – their bundles on flights + hotels always blows my mind! Just something I’ve used to make my trips possible 🙂 (I’ve been to Paris 8x and also studied there for a summer!)

Inserting myself into your conversation 🙂. My husband and I stayed in an Airbnb for most of our trip, but then spent our last night at Hôtel Maison Malesherbes. It was super cute and comfortable. The room was on the smaller side for what we’re used to in America, but it was extactly what we needed, and was under $200 a night. We would definitely stay there again.

To be fair–you stay in the Ritz for a “treat yo’ self,” not to travel on a budget.

Reply
Caroline

Definitely fair! I choose to treat myself to shoes at Chanel and take advantage of the tax refund 🙂

Becca

I approve of that treat yo’ self! How are they holding up? My espadrilles are only doing so so and I’m harder on heels so I worry about investing.

I’m extremely happy with the way the ballet flats hold up! I joke that my original pair’s cost per wear is about $0.02 nowadays. I just got the pair I purchased in 2014 resoled a few weeks ago. I haven’t had the slingbacks for very long, but I’m happy with their durability as well.

A Girl, A Style

Oh. My. Goodness. I’ve dreamed of staying there since they re-opened (the Windsor Suite!), but after visiting there last month (just for a cocktail), it’s definitely on my list so I think I’ll treat myself for a birthday or New Year’s Eve.

And what we really want to know: did you get to keep the monogrammed pillows? 😉

Looks beautiful! The prices are so insane though!! I’m definitely more a saver who wouldn’t dream of dropping that much cash on a hotel, but it sure looks pretty.

Did you pay for this with your own money? Or was this comped/partially paid for by another company or the hotel?

Thank you for sharing the details of your Paris trip. I am going with my family in December and have made reservations at the restaurant, Substance, that you recommended.

Gorgeous! I’ve really enjoyed the last two travel posts… and not just because I’m dreaming of being in Paris. Enjoy the longer reads.

Question about the expedited customs, did you have to arrange this or did it come standard with the reservation?

Merci!

Good for you guys for treating yourselves! I’d LOVE to stay at the Ritz. It looks amazing! For the people who don’t want to fork over the dough, you can always grab a drink at Bar Hemingway there — it’s rightly famous and DIVINE. (It’s also pricy but $50 cocktail pricy is probably easier to fit into the budget! There IS a cocktail on the menu that’s like $1200 so don’t accidentally order that one.)

Your trip looks perfect! Last June my sister and I went on a girls trip to Paris with her 7 month old and my 5 month old. After getting the time off and booking the flights we started to look for a place to stay. As you know Parisian hotel rooms in desirable locations are generally small and we later found out that European hotel cribs are huge! The only thing that would work were “treat yo self” situations. Twist my arm, we booked it. Before leaving we considered it a once in a lifetime treat, but now we joke that need to figure out to budget for our new standards. How do you ever go back?!
P.S. other readers must think you’re putting out serious European vibes after your travels. Such pointed questions/comments about how much and how you pay for things are considered slightly less crass outside of the United States.

Seriously SO CUTE that they monogrammed your initials on the pillows. Also, I LOVE the Coco Chanel suite. It would be my dream to stay there as well! Glad you have a lovely trip, Carly! It looked like an amazing time.
