DIARY No. 127

What we’ve been up to the last few of weeks according to my camera roll! I skipped one of these so there’s lots to catch up on…

My favorite time of the day is curling up before bedtime and reading tons of books. I love children’s books and we all have our favorites. Going to the library has been a highlight of our week too because we get a whole new batch of books. Some are duds and some are just meh and some we end up reading two times a night every night. Library Lion was a library win for us!

My friend Laura and I made the day trip up to Rowayton, CT to visit the Penny Linn flagship store ahead of their opening. (It’s open to the public now!) The store is incredible and a dream for any needlepointer whether you’re brand new or a seasoned stitcher. I was drooling over the canvases, all the thread choices, and also the finished examples on display! I had the best time and will be back.

Surprise, surprise. All the mahjong. Grateful to have friends that are equally as obsessed as I am. We’re trying to play as frequently as possible! I just love everything about it.

I popped over to the city for an evening with Apple Books and Reese’s Book Club. Reese Witherspoon hosted a conversation with Clare Leslie Hall, the author of Broken Country. It was such a fun night and I got to see Becca Freeman and meet other bookstagrammers and authors.

The way I love this view on my desk so, so much. My sweet boys (here is the frame) and an Inslee calendar.

Speaking of the boys. They are thrilled with longer, warmer days. We have been outside so much and Rory has upgraded from sitting on the sidelines to “riding” his little bike. Honestly this just gets me so excited for summer!!

I have been loving Sakara. I will definitely do it again for busier weeks or if I just am craving a super healthy week. Maybe I’ll do a longer review, but I’ll say that I found all the meals to be so filling and delicious. After the holidays and my new food allergy situation, I’ve been having anxiety around eating food which is a whole situation. Having prepared meals in the fridge was so good for my mental health and making sure I didn’t have an excuse to not eat. Instead of worrying over everything, I found myself going into auto-pilot mode which was such a nice relief.

More mahjong! This time my friend and I snuck away for a couple of hours and played Siamese mahjong for the first time. It took a minute to get into a good rhythm and then once we got it we were off to the races. When we were putting the tiles away we both looked at each other and said, “one more game?” We couldn’t stop!

There’s a somewhat new coffee shop in the next town over (Crew in Chatham if you’re local) and they have homemade English muffins. They’re so delicious. My mom was in town and we went twice to get the St. Patrick’s day special lattes.

The best way to keep your house clean with small children? Do everything outside 😉 We have been counting down the days for picnic weather. And honestly we’re not quite there yet warmth wise but we’re still making it happen as often as possible.

A bunch of my neighbors wanted to learn how to play mahjong and I jumped at the chance to host a 101 for them plus a few more friends. (Excited to have more people to play with!!!) It went so, so well and by the end of the night everyone was playing and ordering their 2025 cards. Mission accomplished.

Fewer things more satisfying than pulling out a fresh loaf of bread from the oven.

And last but not least, a sneak peek at Riley Sheehey’s book. This illustration is actually one inspired by a photo of Jack and me when he was one! I love it so much!!

I started playing Hong Kong-style mahjong with my family shortly before the pandemic hit. It’s absolutely the most fun and we are all such experts now that we can gossip as we play. Nothing more satisfying than the sound of those tiles knocking against each other! These sets you have are gorgeous but sooo expensive. We got ours in Chinatown for a song. But of course Hong Kong rules don’t use the cards that American-style mahjong does, nor the jokers, so I don’t think these sets would work for us anyway!
