Personal

Goodbye Connecticut, Hello…

Hoboken!!!!

Goodbye Connecticut

I’ve tried to write this post a handful of times and keep coming up short. Sometimes I have no problem summing up how I feel, but this not one of those times! I’ve really struggled to put into words everything that I am feeling. Even trying to write it out personally in my journal is hard, so I know it’s not just because I’m making a public announcement.

The very, very bottom line is that I am incredibly excited about this move.

My boyfriend and I are moving into a great apartment in Hoboken together. He currently lives there, and we’re moving into a new place just down the road. I haven’t introduced him on my blog out of respect for his privacy, but we met over a year ago through a mutual friend who set us up on a blind date. We got together after work one day. I was just trying to get back into the dating game after my breakup; I was not expecting to meet someone I wanted to be in a relationship with. Our first date was in the city and he discovered that I actually lived in Connecticut and I discovered that he lived in New Jersey. I walked into the date 10 minutes late (whoops) and the second I saw him, I remember thinking, “Oh no…” He was so cute and I felt attracted to him pretty much immediately. We talked for hours (still debating who did the most talking… 😉) and made plans to see each other the following weekend. And then the next… and then the next.

I would not consider our relationship long distance because even though we haven’t lived in the same state, we’ve only been about 35 miles apart. It is a long 35 miles though because it involves driving through the city and spending about $30 on tolls for a round trip. I think we both got to a point where we wanted to live, at the very least, near each other. Even something as simple as getting dinner on a weeknight was nearly impossible between the location and his work.

I think the thing I’m looking the most forward to is being in a normal routine together. There has been so much logistical planning on when and how we see each other (especially with my two little pups!) so it will be a relief not to have to worry about that anymore!

When I moved to Connecticut three years ago, I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. I figured it was just the logical next step when you get tired of the city (which I very much was). Now that I’m leaving (my boyfriend’s job requires him to be in NJ right now and his entire family lives there), I’m really going to miss it. The three things that stand out to me the most: being down the street from the beach, my dog’s boarding place, and my gym.

I know that sounds kind of lame to type out, but I’m REALLY going to miss my gym. Mostly because I’ve made fun friends through the class I take and it’s been an inspiring part of my life for the past year and a half. We have a little community and I’m going to miss them a lot. I know I’m going to see my friends from Connecticut often because we’ll make the time to meet up in the city a bunch and see each other at blogger events, but I probably won’t see my gym friends again. With that said, I’m looking forward to joining a new gym in Hoboken. I’ve already been asking around and there are a few places I want to check out in person, but I’d love to hear your recommendations if you’re from the area!

And the place where my dogs board has also been such a godsend; they love Hamilton and Teddy like their own. It’s such a huge blessing to find great care for your pets as I’m sure any pet owner can understand. My little guys were so, so spoiled there and I am anxious to find a place/person/company in Hoboken who can fill that void. Again, if anyone knows of a place, please please please leave a comment or shoot me an email!

So… Am I excited about Hoboken?!

In a lot of ways, I really am! There are some things that I’m not thrilled about that I feel like I have to be pretty honest about. (And it’s not a surprise to my boyfriend because we’ve obviously had these conversations haha) The biggest one is that we’re renting an apartment. Of course, it makes the most sense to rent because of where we are in our relationship, plus I don’t want to buy in Hoboken (although we looked). I always said that the apartment in Connecticut would be my last…. but life throws you some curveballs and you should never say never.😉 The apartment itself… for being in a city, I’d say it’s great! We have a private backyard (🙌🏻) and there’s a huge living space which should be fun to host dinner parties in! I will also have an actual office that I’m very much looking forward to. (Right now, I have a workable space but there’s zero natural light.)

I’ve come around to being excited about living in a city again. I had gotten pretty used to driving and (again, please don’t judge me, I’m just being honest) loved getting all my groceries into my car after running errands. Within a week of being out of New York City, I never thought I’d be able to go back since it’s so easy to get used to the comfort of having extra space (like room for an 18-pack of toilet paper or whatever).

Now, with all that said, I love Hoboken. I had only been once when I lived in NYC and didn’t think too much of it since I didn’t see much other than NYC skyline. Because I’ve spent so many weekends in Hoboken with my boyfriend now, it’s grown on me! I have wondered, more than a few times, why I didn’t consider Hoboken more when I was leaving NYC. It’s a great little city with a ton of fantastic restaurants and shops. It’s definitely “friendlier” too than the city because it has a true community and neighborhood feel. It’s only about two square miles and there are babies and dogs everywhere you turn.

I also know a surprising number of people there already (like my friend Carolyn!) so I’m excited to be near them and being closer to my friends in the city. As I started sharing that I was moving with people I work with, I found a few more people who live there too… and I even found a parking space to rent (if you know anything about Hoboken, you know how horrible parking can be!) from a girl who, it turns out, reads my blog!

Maybe it’s because I’ve moved around quite a bit in my life (born in Georgia, then Massachusetts, then Florida, then DC for school, then New York, then Connecticut), but this doesn’t feel like some monumental move to me. It feels very “right,” for lack of a better phrase, to be moving in with my boyfriend and I’m ready for the change. It makes it seem a whole lot less daunting because I’ve basically been there every week for the past year! If anything, I’m looking forward to not having to leave. Again, I know it’s not really long distance, but I knew I was ready to make the move when it started to feel agonizing to leave every Sunday night. I felt like I was in limbo between where I lived (Connecticut) and where I wanted to be (with him).

As always, looking forward to sharing this next chapter of my journey with you!

Welcome to Hoboken Carly! So excited to hear about your move. I live in Hoboken (though on the West Coast for the time being) and LOVE it! There’s an increasing number of fitness options (Bar Method is my go-to, and a SoulCycle and SLT just opened; have heard great things about Pavana Yoga and Work it Out). For gyms, Crunch is by the water, new equipment, plenty of room (for Hoboken), and never too crowded.

If you haven’t tried it yet – Antique Bar & Bakery on Willow is my favorite restaurant! Opened in early 2017 and I’ve been at least 20 times.

Can’t wait to see your posts about the move and what you discover in Hoboken.

Ah! I’m so excited for you! I love living here. Benefits of living in NYC without the cramped space. And I still drive to Costco in Clifton and Trader Joe’s on willow! It’s much easier now because driving is easier. And the path train is only 15 minutes into the city. So much easier for events!

GIRL PREACH. I currently do long distance with my boyfriend and know exactly what you mean when you talked of dreading leaving. I just got finished visiting his family with him for a ski trip in Tahoe and it was so hard saying goodbye. We’re so ready for the day when I don’t have to leave which also means me having to pick up and move from Philly to Alabama! Would love to hear about how you adjust from the semi long distance to living together. Definitely going to need some advice in that department in the next year 😉 Congrats on figuring out this next step in life, wishing you all the happiness as you adjust to your new norm!

Wishing you all the best on your move! I grew up moving and traveling a lot internationally and it’s always exciting to make a brand new start and discover someplace new. I’ve always wondered about living in Connecticut and you make it sound and look so good! What city or town in Connecticut are you moving from?

Congratulations on the big move! I feel silly commenting but as excited I am for you that you’ve come over personal leaps and bounds in the past year that for some people take years (you’re literally a poster child for personal growth 🙂 I feel a sense of twinge…

I want to give a shout out to any other readers in a LDR. I’m currently in a LDR and have been for several years due to mine and my boyfriend’s graduate schools and jobs. He’s currently a second year medical resident with one year left in his program. And when he’s done we will FINALLY be in the same place and I frankly I cannot be more excited! We are currently two hours apart and I do most of the visiting because I have more flexibility on the weekends. I’m usually up there at least 3 out of 4 weekends a month. I’d love to be just 35 miles from him. I have an easier drive because it’s just 120 miles north and I’m not driving through NYC but girl 35 miles would be amazing. I’m appreciative that you acknowledge that you aren’t in a LDR but for someone who is in a LDR the logistics and mileage etc to me is what I have to live and breathe daily. I understand convenience and I’m so happy for you to gain conevenience, but it doesn’t seem like it’s not inconvenient. Like I said I don’t want to seem like I’m not happy for you I’m just looking out for all my other LDR girls who would dream of a 35 mile distance and would do just about anything for that to happen. I hope you understand my point of view and respect my honesty.

The 35 miles takes at least 2 hours because of the nyc traffic. 🙃 (Unless I go very early Saturday morning when there is zero traffic and no car accidents yet.) one time it took 3.5 hours because I got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for two hours trying to get through the Lincoln tunnel… it was so bad

I live in NYC and my boyfriend lives outside of Philly. I’m an actor so I have to be in NYC and his job is based out of Philly. We’ve been together for 6 years and we make it work (we spend A LOT of time on NJ Transit and at Penn Station) but it drives me nuts every time leaving 🙁 I keep trying to think of a day job that would give me flexibility (like blogging!) to just pick up and move and still be able to audition and do shows when I can. We both love what we do and love each other. Making it work is the most important part! THRILLED you get don’t have to have anymore sad Sundays 🙂

My boyfriend and I are 200 miles apart for grad school, which sometimes feels like a lot. The other day I was missing him a ton, and a classmate brought up how much he missed his wife and two year old; they’re on another continent literally across the ocean. I was immediately in awe of the sacrifice he is making for his family, but you know what? I still really missed my partner.

On the one hand, I know the struggle could ALWAYS be worse, some people wouldn’t even consider my relationship “long distance,” or are missing family members who are changing and growing every day. On the other, I really think anyone who is missing their person is totally valid, whether they live across town or across the world.

Carly, as always, I value your candor and honesty talking about a difficult subject. I can’t wait to see how you make the new place uniquely yours.

Congrats, Carly! So happy for you. I’m in a situation where my boyfriend lives an hour away and in another state (Maine). I am up there every week and dealing with logistics too. I can not wait to move up there with him in Sept to never have to ‘leave’ again – I know just how you feel! So happy you guys are finally together full time.

I’ve been following your blog for a few years and was totally sure you were moving to Hoboken. (Bluestone Lane coffee tipped me off, ha!)
I bought an apartment and have lived in Hoboken for a little under a year now. I wanted more space than I had in Manhattan, and my fiance couldn’t imagine living anywhere he wouldn’t have a car. Anyways, here I am, and I love it! I tested a few different gyms over here and have been loving the classes at NYSC (esp the one uptown). You should try it out!

How cool! One of my best friends, and so many others we went to college with, moved to Hoboken after graduating (they all work in the city), so I spent many weekends there (I would go down from Rhode Island, where I lived at the time). Best of luck with the move! xx

Best of luck, Carly! I did the reverse a few months ago (from NYC to Stamford) with my fiancé and not having to say goodbye all the time is the best part.

So excited for you! I’ve also been in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend for about a year and a half. Any mileage apart is HARD. We split our time between CT and NYC which is geographically close but is usually at least a two hour trip! I’m happy you’re getting to transition to this next chapter- please let us know what it’s like going from LDR to living together full time! That’s definitely something I’m nervous-excited about myself! Good luck and congrats!!!

This was one of the most anticipated posts, not because I’m nosey (although that’s part of it lol) but really because I knew that after your breakup, something amazing would happen for you. I was SO excited to hear you had a new bf and I this new chapter in your life seems to fit so seamlessly. I look up to you in so many ways because I to have moved around a lot and I’m stuck in the place where I don’t quite know yet where my “home” exactly is. BTW – I thought this post was PERFECTLY written, you may not have felt like you summed up your thoughts but I literally don’t think you could’ve done a better job. Congrats on your new place – I am SOOOO excited to see all the decor posts and your backyard (how amazing!!). I wish you the best and hope your move goes smoothly!!

I used to be long distance with my boyfriend (between MA and NJ) and it was AWFUL. The weight I felt lifted when we moved in together was amazing.

You are so cute Carly! Most people in my area (central jersey) wouldn’t necessarily consider Hoboken a city, because it’s not in THE city. It still has a lot of city difficulties though! My parents live in Guttenberg and if you like Cuban food, Rumba Cubana is worth the trip 😍

Congrats and welcome to Jersey! Coming from Texas I totally get what you mean about driving around for errands 🙂 in case you haven’t been, Edgewater and West New York actually have a lot of shopping (Anthro, Gap, BR, Homegoods, TJ, WF etc) with parking about 15 min from Hoboken without traffic! And for groceries as others have mentioned there’s TJ and Shoprite. Good luck with settling in.

Congratulations, Carly! It’s so nice to move and start fresh in a new area. I feel your pain on the apartment living. We lived in a town home before we moved to South Carolina and when we did we were not yet ready to buy a house there. We did the apartment thing for about 7 months then moved into a home that we bought after months of research and house hunting.

I LOVE the community and gym at Work It Out. There are two locations in Hoboken, one on River St. and one on Willow St. They offer a tremendous variety of classes and the owners, staff, and members are so warm and welcoming. Something I liked about this post, which you describe in the beginning, is how you don’t know how to put what you feel in words- sometimes your other posts are very concise and flow seamlessly. With this one, however, I could definitely tell throughout the post that you have this torn feeling about your comforts in CT vs. that feeling of “rightness” in NJ (sometimes things just feel right, even if we ourselves can’t explain it). PS: my favorite part was the toilet paper comment; no one truly understands how something like bringing home groceries/supplies is a PROCESS until you live in a city!) Loved the last line about being in limbo, I think it perfectly sums up your post. So excited to see the way your life shapes and shifts into something new in Hoboken!

Hoboken! I’ve lived here 7+ years since college and I absolutely love it. You’ll find you can still drive to grocery stores like Acme, Shop Rite or Trader Joe’s with no problem at all and can still stock up.
