July Books

So, I didn’t read as many books this month… but I had a lot of all-day babysitting gigs, and I’ve been working on a lot of Sweet Lemon Magazine (yay!!!!) stuff.  Anyway- I did read some books that I thought I’d do a little re-cap of.
By the way- if you read my Harry Potter post… I’ve decided to read it!  I’m going to wait until I go back to school though.  I have some hard copy books that I found in my house that piqued my interest, so I’m going to read those during August (I don’t want to lug heavy books back to school).  Also, I searched high and low in our house and have yet to find HP 1 or 2, ugh… buying them on the nook.
(PS this isn’t the order that I read the books in… )
Carpool Diem
by Nancy Star
Okay, I found this book beyond hilarious.  It’s really corny and cheesy, but if anyone has been on the sidelines of a soccer game (hello, Sporty Sister is my sister) and witnessed crazy parents (hello, Soccer Mom and Dad are my parents) then you will GET and LOVE the humor of this book.

Divergent
Veronica Roth
This is the College Prepster Book Club selection for July/August!  Definitely read it!!!

Me & Emma
by Elizabeth Flock
Holy moly- sad, sad, sad, sad!  But the story is really good, even if you will cry.  Poor little girls!

Never Let Me Go
by Kazuo Ishiguro
Eh.  Interesting story, I guess.  Not a fan of the style of writing.

Paper Wings
by Marly Swick
Weird.  Barely any story.  Difficult start, boring end.

Sisterhood Everlasting
by Ann Brashares
GREAT!  If you were a fan of the Traveling Pants series (seriously though, who wasn’t), you will LOVE this book!  It’s really sad, and kind of slow, and depressing at the beginning…. get through that and you’ll fall right back in love with the gang!

The Devil in the Junior League
by Linda Francis Lee
Surprisingly entertaining.  Wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but it was a cute summer read.

The Overachievers
by Alexandra Robbins
You can read about why I loved this book so much here.
Phew!  What have you guys been reading?  What’s next on your list?  What’s sitting on your night stand???
xoxo
PS Please pinch me… tomorrow can’t possibly be August!

I really enjoyed reading The Ex-Debutante, and The Next Thing On My List this month, and the second I read this I went and bought a sample of Sisterhood Everlasting. I had no idea she wrote another sisterhood book!

Thanks for all the reviews. I need some new books to read. I am reading Jane Eyre right now and as much as I LOVE reading cannot believe this is the first time I have read it-I LOVE it. I didn't know there was another sisterhood book either-excited to read that and I still have to get the book club pick. I can't wait to hear how you like Harry Potter!

I had no idea there was another Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book! Thanks for letting me know about it =) I'm currently working through my own summer reading list (you can check it out here: http://bit.ly/qaawIW). It's been slow reading so far, but I've managed to cross a few books off my list!

I read Sisterhood Everlasting this month, too. It was SO sad, but I thought the book ended well. I just started The Fountainhead today, which is a bit intimidating. Hope you enjoy Harry Potter when you get around to reading it!

Carly I think books might be the one thing that you and I are perfectly opposite on. Kazuo Ishiguro is my favorite writer, but Jodi Picoult and the whole Traveling pants series makes me want to rip my hair out.

I'm so impressed by how much you read over the summer, I get too distracted by the television/internet. I have to be doing 10 things at once and unfortunately books are not a multitasking thing.

I completely agree about Never Let Me Go. I kept hearing what an awesome book it was and how it was the saddest/best book people has ever read. I thought all the characters were nonsympathetic/irritating, and while the premise was interesting, it never grabbed me like a good book should.

I am definitely going to pick up a copy of Overachievers as well as Carpool Diem for beach reading next week! Thanks for the reviews/recommendations!

I love Ishiguro…. you absolutely must see the movie with Carrie Mulligan and Kiera Knightley, it's beyond beautiful. I'm currently reading East of Eden and I definitely recommend that as well 🙂

Haha, I remember the crazy soccer parents! And The Devil in the Junior League sounds really good, too. I've read A Royal Match and Wicked this month, and they were both really good.

How can you be "eh" about Never Let Me Go!!??

By far one of the greatest novels written in at least the last twenty-five years. I'm a fan of Remains of the Day, but Never Let Me Go was way better. It's sold alternate timeline science fiction, but it also has timeless and uncomfortable messages about human nature.

If you didn't like the story, good. You weren't supposed to like Never Let Me Go. It was supposed to make you feel angry, upset, disturbed, sick to your stomach, and feeling like you wanted to do something to make the world a better place. That's great literature.

Thank you for posting your thoughts on these books. I always have trouble picking out good reads because I tend to be lured in by a cute cover more so than how good or bad the story actually sounds. I'm in the middle of One Day by David Nicolls. So far It's a great book– I highly, highly recommend it for anyone, especially if you're in college or fresh out of it.

totally agree about never let me go…the concept is so interesting but the writing style was so strange. i'm a very avid reader and it was one of the only books i just had to give up on and just watch the movie.

I didn't read Never Let Me Go but I enjoyed the movie.

Devil in the Junior League is one of my favorites!

I didn't love the most recent Sisterhood book. I thought the plot just didn't flow/the big twist sorta came out of left field!
