Book Club: The American Heiress

One of my absolute favorite things about the weekend is Sunday mornings. I typically have meetings and fun things planned with friends on Saturdays. Which I love, don’t get me wrong. But I have to get up relatively early. Sunday mornings, on the other hand, are for staying in bed extra long and reading!
After reaching out to Twitter for book recommendations, one of my friends from Georgetown suggested The American Heiress. I typically don’t read these types of books, but it was compared to The Downton Abbey so I decided to give it a go.
I will admit… this wasn’t a book that I dove right into. It took a couple of attempts to really get a feel for the story. But, just like Downton Abbey, it’s just kind of a slow moving plot– but not in a bad way! I really ended up liking it.
It takes place during the Gilded Age and focuses on Cora Cash, an American Heiress, who finds herself in a relationship with a Duke in England. The book has everything you need for a guilty-read… and the length is just enough to keep you entertained for a while.
One of my favorite parts was the author’s notes at the end. I would definitely recommend skipping to the back and reading through it. (Don’t worry! It won’t ruin the story!) As I was reading the book, I really just thought a lot of it was horrendously ridiculous. Apparently so did the editors… but the insanely extravagant details (like solid gold corsets) are based on real stories. I know.
What books are you reading right now?

I know it came out a while ago, but I am really looking forward to reading the Devil Wears Prada! I can't wait to finally start it 🙂

This definitely looks like a book I would read! I think it would be a good book to read to just relax.

I actually just ordered this book from Amazon last week – it's due to arrive today. It's not what I typically read, so I'm excited to give it a try!

I just ordered this book from Amazon & am so excited to dig in, thanks for recommending it!

If you haven't already read it, check out "Snobs" by Julian Fellows (the writer/creator of Downton Abbey) – it's a fun read!

I'm reading "Inferno" by Dan Brown. Thanks for the recommendation, though!! I love Downtown Abbey — I've only watched Season 1, but my mom just loaned me Season 2!

I recently finished this book and overall I liked it! There were parts that probably could have been left out and aspects of the story I would have liked to go into more depth. Overall a good book!
