Since starting the 1,000 Hours Outside challenge, we’ve spent a lot less time in our playroom. And even though it’s the middle of the summer, I’ve already started thinking about how we’ll keep our energetic toddler occupied once the weather cools down. Honestly I’m more than happy with our playroom setup, but I’ve definitely caught the interior design bug after our big renovation. (I know I keep mentioning this, but…. it’s true!) Our basement is one of the places our interior designer didn’t touch and I can’t help but dream into some playroom ideas that would make our current space even cuter without losing an ounce of functionality!
Playroom Ideas
STRIPED PILLOW // PLAY FOOD STAND // PLAY MAT
POM POM BIN // SCALLOPED SHELF
MAGNETIC ART HANGER // BLANKET // ROLLING CART
Bins are one of my favorite playroom ideas in general. They are always, always useful for kids toy storage. This one is my aesthetic to a tee, and the wheels? Genius. The price obviously isn’t attainable for everyone, but I will say that it’s a part of the same collection as my kitchen stools, which are heavy duty. They still look brand new! From the same retailer (surprise, surprise) are these lidded baskets. The lid creates a much cleaner look– which I would definitely appreciate in such a naturally chaotic space.
My friend Mackenzie has spoken highly of this $30 gingham pillow cover, and obviously I had to seek out this $27 one (that actually matches Jack’s room perfectly, though I’d snip the tassels off) from the same brand. Fabric is never truly safe around kids, so I love that if it were to get ruined, I wouldn’t feel bad about tossing it. This play food stand caught my eye for two reasons– besides the blue and white scalloped awning. It’s compact compared to others, plus the design is pretty generic, which is great for open-ended play. I already talked up our play mat before, but I wanted to link another one because I truly believe they should be essential when designing a playroom.
Soft-sided bins are amazing as playroom storage for oddly shaped toys and these ones with pom poms are just too cute. Now for my favorite playroom idea: this darling shelf!! I love how the scalloping adds a little extra “pop” of personality.
Jack comes home with a TON of art from daycare. I love it, but most of the time I don’t know where to put it! Enter one of the best playroom ideas ever. These magnetic bars (which also come in silver and white, which I prefer) are genius because you can switch out the pieces without doing any damage. Also, how special would it be for your kids to see their art hung up!! We have so many ChappyWraps around the house and Jack loves how “co co” (cozy) they are. The mini ones are super versatile– they can be used as a picnic blanket, part of a fort, etc. Finally, this rolling cart would be perfect for art supplies, but also all kinds of imaginative play! The wheels make it so much easier for a toddler to use.
So many cute and function ideas too! http://www.elspethsdaybyday.com
You inspired me to start the 1000 hours outside challenge! Similarly, I don’t use my basement as much anymore which is where I play piano, craft, and watch TV – I’m always trying to be outside!
Honestly my favorite thing to do in our kiddo play areas lately is declutter. I’ve gotten rid of a couple of pieces of furniture as well as many toys/craft supplies/etc this summer and my “less is more” approach is paying off dividends with my kiddo. He’s more engaged when there are fewer things around and I have to pick up and clean way less!
