Ann Brashares is the author of the totally amazing Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. She is absolutely one of my favorite authors. (How could she not be?! #LenaandKostasForever)
We’ve teamed up to give away FIVE signed copies of
The Here and Now and she graciously did a Q&A too!
Tell us about your new book! How was the writing process different for you this time around?
This is a story about a girl born in the year 2096 who secretly immigrates to the year 2010 when she is 12 years old. The book begins in the present. She is now 17 and bound by rules of secrecy. She’s formed a strong attachment to a boy named Ethan Jarves, a ‘time native’ as her community refers to him, but she is forbidden to have any physical or emotional intimacy with anyone
The writing process was different because, time travel, while totally fascinating, creates narrative tangles beyond anything I imagined.
Why do you think Sisterhood fans will like The Here and Now?
It’s about love, friendship, family, like the Sisterhood books. It also comes with a set of rules just as the Sisterhood does.
Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
I always loved reading and I always loved to tell myself stories, but I didn’t realize I wanted to be a writer until I was in my 30s.
So many of my readers want to be writers? Do you have any advice you can give them on how you’ve dealt with rejection? Or just advice in general?
My advice would be to believe in the worlds you create—to take them seriously to the deepest and smallest detail—and to believe in yourself as a writer. If you don’t, no one else will.
Can you give us any details about the recent Sisterhood Everlasting movie news? Do you think the original cast will sign on again?
I was thrilled to hear that news and thrilled that Ken Kwapis signed on to direct. I really hope the original cast will be back. I know they formed a deep bond filming the original movies and that they remain very close. I get the sense they would be happy working together again. Fingers crossed!
