Now that we’re a month into the year, two themes are emerging for me already. The first is that it’s not selfish to put yourself first. I’ve really been practicing taking care of myself and it’s making me an all-around better person, which allows me to be better for everyone else. (Win/win!) And the second is that I really, really like to dress comfortably.
Even when I’m getting dressed up, I like to feel great. I refuse to wear anything that pinches or itches; even with shoes, there’s only so much pain I can tolerate nowadays.
One thing I’ve embraced in terms of comfort? Athleisure. I semi-joke that it’s suburban mom uniform, but I swear it’s so comfortable. I do wear this to the gym and for outdoor activities… and for just everyday running around.
While I love navy, I have been pretty into black lately. I normally swap my navys for blacks in the winter, but I imagine I’m going to be wearing a lot of black on black throughout the year.
I do have to praise these leggings. Back in September, I was heading to the beach for Labor Day. I packed lots of summery things and it turned out to be a very chilly and rainy weekend. Knowing my seersucker dress wasn’t going to cut it, I popped into an Athleta on my way to the beach to pick up a few things for a cozy weekend indoors. I bought these leggings and they are amazing. They fit great (I’m normally a small in yoga pants but went with an XS in these) and hit at the perfect spot. I usually get capris because tights are too long for me, but these still show a little ankle. 🙌🏻
These are also good sneaks for running around. I hate the feeling of socks and these feel great without.
I ran a 5k in December. It was freezing and I went back to the Athleta store for some help. My friend who is an avid runner sent me a list of things that I should look for and the Athleta saleswoman helped me find it all! I’m so glad I bought this pullover. Not just for the race, but for everyday wear too.
Anyone else into athleisure? I can’t seem to get enough of it.
Hooded Puffer // Quarter Zip // Leggings // Sneakers
PS I found a similar quarter zip that’s under $20! Can’t beat that.
I also prefer being comfy! Honestly, though, I haven’t gotten that into athleasure because I don’t want to pay a lot of money from Lulu, but I do like to do coffee runs in leggings! Haha.

Athleisure fashion is my favourite! It’s so comfortable but yet never fails to look stylish. We also have the same shoes, Carly! 🙂

I am obsessed with athleisure! I live in Germany and people only wear athletic clothes to the gym and most shower there and change. I go to the grocery store, walk my dog & run other errands all in my athleisure. I get some looks but I am so comfortable I just don’t care! I’ll have to check out Athelta. I’m a Lulu girl to the end!
I am the opposite– living in this part of Europe I would never go out in public that way if I wanted to be treated well. I don’t like it but people here are judgey and you don’t get good service or treatment from people usually dressed that way. (Although it has still become more casual here than it used to be– for example, when I first moved over here I was told never, ever to wear sports shoes for anythign other than sports.. but this is catching on amongst the younger generation especially.)
I just had a conversation with my mom on the weekend about the rise of athleisure. I have been looking for interesting and well-made suit pieces, but there nowhere to be found! Leggings, on the other hand, are everywhere! Blouses? Barely! T-shirts? Every.darn.where! I do like to be comfortable, but hoodies and leggings don’t make the cut for many circumstances in my life.
Yes— there is more and more of this athleisure stuff and less and less of quality basics. Even stores/brands that in theory still stock some of these things seem to be scrimping on quality– adding in synthetics, thinner fabrics, hardware that is not as durable, etc. There is a time and place for leisurewear but personally I feel it is not appropriate for many situations outside of a gym or one’s home.
So I typically wear business casual to work (not suits), but I find a lot of really great tops and sweaters at Loft! My favorite work pants are from Banana Republic, and Target also had some surprisingly cute tie waist work pants from their line A New Day. I just needed to start wearing business casual this past fall (I’ve alsways been able to wear jeans to work in the past), and I agree, it was so hard to find quality basics that weren’t extremely expensive!
For every day running around you should try the AllBirds sneakers! You don’t need socks and they are the most comfortable shoes on the face of the planet!
I work from home 4 days a week and live in Lululemon – I put jeans on on Saturday for the first time in I don’t know long and was SO uncomfortable from the minute I put them on. Now I’m looking into Athleta’s Sculptek jeans!
Omg I absolutely love athi-leisure! I have to agree, putting yourself first and practicing self-love isn’t selfish, it’s totally worth it! And being comfy is an everyday must!
I hope you’re having a lovely Tuesday!

I have been searching for good quality leggings. I will definitely have to try these!

I have to say I’m in the opposite camp on athleisure. Honestly, unless someone is wearing it because they are in fact participating in something athletic, it comes across as not really trying. Perhaps it’s my age?! At 36 I am starting to get tired of athleisure, leggings as pants (still totally fine with tunics or longer tops) and excessively ripped jeans of all types.
I am the queen of the suburban mom running errands look (in those Nikes!)
I could live in athleisure every day of the year! I practically live in my yoga pants and comfy tees.
If I could wear this everyday, I’d be in heaven! Do you have any races coming up?

One in April and possibly one in May! My foot has been KILLING me lately so I haven’t been able to run… we’ll see how this pans out ha!
You go girl! My foot was hurting too because I started running long distance at the beginning of the year. I went to my doctor and nothing was wrong. So, instead I invested in new running shoes! I wore Nike’s before and they just didn’t have good support. What do you use to run? I got these and my foot hasn’t hurt since I started using them! https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/asics-gel-kayano-24-running-shoe-women/4613356?contextualcategoryid=2375500&origin=keywordsearch&keyword=asics
I hope your foot feels better soon!
I only wear Asics to run! I got properly fitted for running shoes so I’m 98% sure it’s unrelated to that!
Finally someone who runs in Asics too!
Yesssss, ASICS are zeee best! (PS if you run Magnolia Marathon, I’ll be there and let’s snap pic!!)
I’m all about athleisure (but I’m also a suburban mom!). Athleta has the BEST leggings!
Can’t get enough of athleisure! Also, Carly, athleisure is you’re thing! You look so badass!

I’m all about Athleisure, it’s almost my uniform for college. It’s also convenient because just after classes I can jump into the gym with no problem! I always have a towel in my car for that matter haha!
Oh that looks like a great pull over, does it bother you around your neck when you run?
Also I’d love to see how you are organizing your athletic clothes these days!
It doesn’t, but I’m also not an intense runner at all so I would take my running recommendations with a grain of salt! It works for me!
Basically my college uniform as a student athlete!! I’ve never been to Athleta, I’m pretty biased towards Nike but maybe I’ll have to check it out 🙂
I practically live in my tights and pullovers! Athleta has been KILLING it lately. I just got their catalog in the mail and it’s safe to say I want one of everything 😉 Think I’m going to pull the trigger on these tennis shoes. Do you wear them to workout in, too? Or more for running around town? My training shoes are so beat, but I have yet to find something that works for the classes I take.
I wouldn’t recommend them for serious workouts!
Good to know – thank you! 🙂
I noticed you’ve been wearing more black! It looks so great on you, with your dark hair. I just love navy too much!
I agree with you – nothing beats being comfortable! I love how the Athleta wear still looks like clothes and are thoughtfully designed – like the pockets zip closed etc. xAllie http://www.theallthatglittersblog.com
I so prefer to be comfortable than to be on top of every little trend! We did a post all about the best stretchy pants for your Thanksgiving outfit 🙂 http://areweadultsyet.com/2017/11/16/best-stretchy-pants-for-your-thanksgiving-outfit/
Athleisure can still be fashionable, you’re definitely proof of that!

Hi there. What color lipstick are you wearing in athleisure wear photo? Looks great!
Nars, Jane https://cprep.co/2DNT8OX
Thanks so much Carly!!
I’m a big supporter of the athleisure trend! I work from home so it’s basically what I live in all week long. It tends to be pricey but I’ve found that Backcountry carries a lot of nice pieces. Between that and the Patagonia discounts, I’m always keeping a watchful eye on their sales!

I live for Backcountry sales 😉
I only wear leggings if I have a top long enough to cover my rear. It’s really hard to find longer tops.
