I’ve been on the road so much lately. (Who am I?!) I thought I’d have all this time to read during car rides and on flights, but within twenty minutes I start to feel carsick. I used to never get carsick, and now it hits me like a ton of bricks.
I also do so much more driving. (I barely drove in high school because I walked to school and split driving times with my best friend.) While I love a good audiobook, I’m also a massive fan of podcasts. They’re much easier to listen to than an audiobook because the episodes are conversational or structured in an easily digestible way.
Julia and I just drove from Palm Beach to Tampa yesterday. It’s not a bad drive (just under four hours once we factored in our coffee stops) and I introduced her to the wonder of podcasts. The two of us were hooked on this one podcast that I kept seeing all over Twitter. It’s called “Missing Richard Simmons.” The podcast kind of does a deep dive on Richard Simmons (yes, the workout guy) and what happened to him after he “disappeared” in 2014.
We listened to all available episodes and even downloaded an app (Stitcher– it’s great) to have early access to the next episode. There’s only one left… I’m already in search of another great podcast to get into.
This was Julia’s first foray into podcasts, though, and it’s safe to say that she’s into it now. I literally am sending her back to Charleston with a list of my personal favorites that I know she will enjoy listening to. I thought I’d share those here as well– and would love it if you shared any that you enjoy!
“Awesome Etiquette” // This has been on the blog before, but it’s really just my favorite podcast to listen to. I love them so much that I “save” the weekly podcasts to listen to while I’m making a long drive by myself. It’s hosted by Emily Post’s great-great-grandchildren and talks about etiquette in a modern sense. The two cousins have great banter, and it’s fun to kind of hear reader’s questions and quiz yourself on what you would/should do.
“Serial” // This podcast took the country by storm!!! If you didn’t get a chance to listen to it, I highly recommend. The first season was my favorite. It discusses the events around a murder of a high school student in the 90s and tries to get to the bottom of who’s guilty. The creators of the podcast have a new series coming out called “S-Town” at the end of the month. Hop on that train now!!
“Stuff You Should Know” // Josh and Chuck host the podcast “Stuff You Should Know, on” and you should know that it’s amazing! They research different topics every week and present it in a highly entertaining and engaging way. You can find a podcast on nearly everything– from history to science to entertainment. Some are about really tiny things and some are on really broad things. They’re all fascinating though. I find that SYSK is a podcast perfect for listening to when you have more than one person in the car as there is always one you can find that everyone will enjoy!
“Modern Love” // If you love the column in the NY Times, you’ll love the podcast. I like hearing the stories read out loud and the essayist updates at the end are a perfect addition. I find that these are best to listen to while I’m doing a task inside like folding laundry, cooking, or cleaning (aka not driving).
Any podcasts out there that I should 100% listen to?
