On My Radar

I’m slowly but surely adjusting to living in Connecticut. Actually it’s going really well, it’s just a little different and there are tons of lose ends from the move. Balancing the usual workflow, tying up those loose ends, and prepping for our trip to Bonaire (tomorrow!!!) I’m feeling a little loopy crazy.
Let’s jump right into what’s been on my radar this week:
I thought this was a really interesting article. I personally don’t follow a lot of brands on Instagram because they feel too “glossy.” Looks like a lot of brands are experimenting with different photography than traditional marketing ads. Combined with Instagram’s latest update to allow vertical and horizontal images (as opposed to only square!) and I think we’re going to see a lot of brands embracing new strategies on Insta.
I did an interview with Career Contessa earlier in the summer and it’s finally live! Would love for you to check it out. (Makes me miss my bedroom wallpaper, ha!)
“I wish I had lived my life differently.” That to me is one of the most terrifying sentences. I think it’s never too late to change course but I also want to try to make the best decisions I can when it comes to how I live my life, both in terms of work and self. I’ve definitely gone down the path of working somewhere with less than ideal conditions and expectations and now I work for myself where every day I have to balance my well-being and my professional endeavors. One of the last lines from the article that really resonated with me: “If you’re going to devote the best years of your life to work, do so intentionally.”
Garrett and I got a Costco membership when we moved to Connecticut. The day we signed up, everyone was walking out of Costco with a watermelon in their cart. Literally everyone. Obviously we got one too because all I could think about was digging into the watermelon when we got home. LOVE this trick for cutting watermelon!
Considering my birthday is right around the corner (gulp, 26), I loved this video about advice through the ages… you definitely have to watch through the end 😉

Anything great on your radar?

I don't know how I feel about the new Instagram update! While I love that you can use both tall and wide photos I feel like they have lost their iconic square branding. I can't wait to see how everything changes branding wise. That article was a great read 😀

Loved your Career Contessa interview! While I'm not a blogger, I love reading blogs & yours is always so refreshing, inspiring, etc. Thank you for being you! 🙂

I love the article on how Instagram is changing the way brands advertise – I'm currently taking an advertising course, and we've been discussing the different ways that brands appeal to users. Definitely bringing up this article in the next class!! Thanks for sharing it!

Absolutely love your interview! Reading again about your journey on how you got to where you are today was inspiring. A side note – can't believe people would show up to your house in NY. I'm a loyal fan and it would be awesome to meet you someday, but that doesn't mean stalking! Lol.

I hope you are settling in well in CT! I've been to Greenwich a couple of times and I loved it. It's a great location, not too close, but not too far from the city! I loved your interview! It is really nice to know how people got where there are today, I gives people assurance and hope.

On My Radar

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you feel like you wake up on Monday morning, blink, and then it’s Friday? I mean, where did the week go?! I have so many fun things coming up that I’ve been antsy to get through the boring stuff. My best friend in the entire world is in town, so I can’t wait to have lunch with her (#doubledate!) and I have a couple of blog events/trips on the horizon that I’m super looking forward to. Definitely make sure you’re following along on Instagram for the latest and greatest.
Some things I read/saw this week and found interesting:

Because who isn’t obsessed with Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe collection? Now you can have them all (well, in illustrated form) in your own apartment. Pop Chart Lab is selling the print and I’m honestly pretty darn obsessed. My favorite part is that the shoes are labeled for episodes and some have the boxes illustrated too… In love.
TWO // Dogs + Treats + Magic

This video. Perfection. I can’t handle the precious little faces they have. I swear a couple of the bigger dogs look right at the camera as if to say, “Dude, did you see that? I hope you got that on film!!!” Such hilarious expressions. (Yep, officially a dog person.)

THREE // Scalloped Pajamas

I may (I am) jumping the gun temperature-wise here, but I think these scalloped pajamas are too cute for summer… plus, they can be monogrammed. My apartment doesn’t do extreme temperatures well. If it’s freezing outside, it’s freezing inside (and the heater barely makes a difference). If it’s boiling outside, it’s boiling inside (and the A/C does not cut it). Thinking about the sticky months last summer, these might just be a must.

FOUR // Oil Pulling

I’ve been seeing “oil pulling” pop up on social media, but I’ve been too afraid to find out what it really means… This week, curiosity got the best of me and I finally was brave enough to read about what it actually is. A Fashionista.com writer (named Carly!) gave it a try and honestly it seems even grosser to me than it did before. Is it something that you’ve tried or would try? Or is anyone else too chicken to do it?

FIVE // Fire Drill Engangement

Wedding videos, including engagement ones, totally get to me. This one was no exception. However, it wasn’t so much the actual proposal (although it was certainly creative and cute). When the firefighters started going from classroom to classroom? I couldn’t handle it. I mean, it was precious. Ring pops?! Brilliant and the bride-to-be just looks beyond smitten… Share your favorite viral wedding/proposal video!! I’d love to watch!

What’s been on your radar this week? Anything important I should read/watch?

What a fabulous way to kick off a Friday! I've actually tried oil pulling (well, once) and it wasn't that bad! I had to immediately brush my teeth, but it was kind of relaxing…and a little gross. Definitely not traumatic or anything. 🙂

I saw that fire drill engagement video the other day on TV! So cute, those engagement stories always get me! It's kind of old but now everytime I hear this song, I always think of this video. So stinkin cute.

Also, I kept hearing all the hype about the oil pulling and people had mentioned to just try in the shower… my advice is to NOT try it in the shower! Everytime I put my head back when I was washing my hair, I felt like I was going to gag on the oil haha sorry if that's a little TMI but yes, oil pulling wasn't exactly my favorite thing. I may get over that little experience and try again though but there's no way I could do it for a full 20 minutes!

I oil pull every morning (and sometimes again at night!!). The texture is a little weird the first few times but you get used to it. Once it is melted it just feels like swishing water! I do it while I shower/fix breakfast and 20 mins is over in no time. I think it is actually relaxing!

I feel like you read my mind with this post. Love, love, love that Carrie chart! Is it wrong to still be enamored with Sex and the City? I absolutely am.

I do oil pulling every morning and have noticed positive effects. Not going to lie though, doing it for the full 20 minutes is challenging. I might need to scoop up those pajamas for myself. Perfect for this rainy weekend we're going to have!

Rachel

I agree with Ashley, Ionly tried oil pulling once. At first, the taste and texture were beyond disgusting and I seriously almost spit it out immediately but after perseverance it became easier. Once you get used to the the texture it isn't bad, especially after it melts, you hardly notice it. I haven't tried it since, im getting the courage up to do it again, but i like the concept of it

Have fun with your BFF! Also oil pulling…I read the same fashionista article and was totally grossed out…I want the benefits but it's just too disgusting sounding…and 20 minutes is SUCH a long time!

Okay, I LOVE that print. My favorite are those shoes you showed that Miranda's water broke on, and the blue pair she left in her and Big's apartment during the movie. LOVE this print!

I've started oil pulling about a week ago & so far, so good. I use coconut oil & I've only been able to do it for 5 minutes. Slowly but surely working my way up to the full 20 minutes!

I've done it! Yes, very awkward and kind of gross, but the results are amazing! Your breath is fresher, teeth are whiter, and you definitely feel like you have a clean mouth. Ten minutes every night (doesn't even have to be EVERY night) does the trick! So worth it!

On My Radar

Be warned. The stomach bug is officially going around the city. I had heard about a few people having it and thought I’d be saved as I typically avoid catching these things. But, nope. What I thought was a migraine ended up being a very gross 24 hour (aka very quick, thank goodness) stomach bug. The day involved lots of laundry, curling up on the floor, and a serious mishap that ended up with me almost fainting and a lot of blood all over my sweater. (I’ll save you the details on that one, but trust me… It was not pretty.)
Rawr! Well, tomorrow I’m off to Washington, DC (still time to RSVP for the meet and greet!) and then the Dominican on Sunday. Goodbye snowstorm, hello 80 degrees!

If you haven’t seen this amazing mom & daughter Instagram, you must check it out now. Of course, the fashion is pretty innovative and the little model is surely the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. But, I think the best part is that this is such a sweet moment between mom and daughter. Some of my best memories of childhood are of being downstairs in the basement sitting at the craft table and painting and doing beads and spin art and creating all sorts of crazy things with my mom and sister! With iPads in the hands of everyone from 1 to 91, I kind of love seeing this little special project.
TWO // Chrisley Knows Best

Truth be told, I don’t watch television. Correction, I always have Netflix on to some kind of TV show while I work because otherwise my apartment is too quiet. And I make sure that I watch Dance Moms every week. (Guilty pleasure.) However, I can’t lie. I need to watch this show. I kept getting sponsored tweets about the show on my timeline. Annoying, but apparently they worked. I went home one night and started watching clips and previews…. Bahahaha, I think it looks great. Anyone else interested in watching?!

THREE // “Seeing New York”

Ann Street Studio (creators of the incredible Cinemagraph) put together some of the most incredible photograph/GIFs of the city. Love the special way they captured the energy and speed– sometimes fast, sometimes slow.

FOUR // These Two Blog Posts

Two of my daily reads posted blog posts this week that really meant something to me. I’ve been reading Chrissy’s Tumblr since I think 2011? She used to live in DC and now lives in Chicago… I don’t know her but just love following her life and career and ups and downs from a distance. She totally summed up the weird, quiet joy of being an adult in this blog post. Paying my rent every month should hurt, but it actually one of my favorite things. It’s a good feeling to just… be an adult sometimes. And then one of my favorite mom blogs also posted about something that I’ve always thought, but had no way of expressing: “can’t also.” A businesswoman can also be a fashionista… etc. It’s a good read.

FIVE // Sweatshirts

I’ve never really had the sportiest of looks. However, now that I work at home, I’ve been living in sweatshirts. Cute sweatshirts, but sweatshirts nonetheless. I’ve had to really stop myself from buying all of them. They’re just super comfortable and I don’t feel totally lazy 😉

What’s on your radar this week?

I'm happy that you're feeling better! I've had a terrible cold all week and cannot wait until its gone.

I'm totally on-board with the sweatshirt trend. I've even managed to wear a couple to work and have received a lot of compliments on my embellished jcew sweatshirts. I think I've managed to trick everyone into thinking they are work appropriate.

Have a great weekend Carly!
