Perking Up

One of the things I always struggle with is feeling well-rested. I hate feeling tired. I like to be on my A-game but just can’t achieve that when I’m not feeling 100%. You know how some people get “hangry” when they’re not properly fed? That’s what I’m like when I’m tired. I’m Debbie Downer and Negative Nancy all in one when I am in need of a few extra Zs. 
It’s something I really work on. I constantly have to check in with myself to see how I’m doing sleep-wise, so I don’t fall into a tired slump. (I can get away with a few days of being a little tired; any more than that and it’s not just not a good situation.)
Here’s some things that help me feel a little perkier beyond just getting a full night’s sleep. Hope they help you, too, if you’re feeling a little run down.
1. Take a multivitamin // This is something I absolutely have to be better about. I’m not really a health nut when it comes to taking vitamins; however, I do know that sometimes I am a little deficient in a vitamin or two, and it makes a huge difference in how I feel. If you’re curious about learning more about vitamins and how they affect your health you should speak with your doctor and a nutritionist! 
2. Drink more water // I am happy to say that my goals of drinking more water have finally paid off. I feel a significant difference when I drink enough and when I don’t. My skin, my attitude, my alertness, everything! I feel so much better. That said, it’s an everyday kind of thing. If I have a day where I don’t pay attention and don’t get enough water, I will feel it.
The best part though is when I’m feeling tired, a glass of water is typically my first line of defense now. It works. That alone can increase my energy (and decrease stress, among other things). 
3. Spend time in outdoors // Not only is being outdoors just good for the soul, it actually is good for you. There are plenty of ways to get Vitamin D (vitamins, certain foods, etc.), but the sun is the best! This is my completely unprofessional opinion here. I need the sun. Now that the weather is finally turning around, it’s the best time to get a little Vitamin D. 
4. Do an activity you love // I would say here that getting in a good workout can help with your exhaustion levels. But I don’t think that’s entirely accurate. I could go for a long run and still feel tired since I don’t enjoy it. Going to a killer yoga class, though? That gives me a huge boost of energy!! Spend time figuring out what kinds of physical activity gets you going. Don’t torture yourself working out to just work out– kill two birds with one stone.
5. Have something to look forward to // When I’m tired, it can also just be a boredom thing. Nothing fun on the horizon to keep me going. I like to find things to keep me excited and energized. Whether it’s the promise of cracking into a great, new book that night or a dinner with one of my favorite friends.
6. Sleep better // This totally seems like a “duh” one, but here me out. It’s obvious that sleeping more would help you feel less tired. Sleeping better will ensure that the hours you do get are totally optimized. Spend an hour or so screen-free (no phones, televisions, or laptops). Keep your phone on silent on the other side of the room. Try to go to sleep at the same time every day and wake up at the same time. Make your sleep work even better for you!

I'm realizing the importance of enough sleep now more than ever this summer as I'm balancing a job and an internship! I'm just so naturally drawn towards staying up late that I really have to work at going to bed early so I can get enough sleep. Water and moving around some are definitely my go-to's for perking up when I get sleepy at either of my office jobs!
