SUMMER READING

Growing up, our summers started the first week of May and ended the first week of August. It’s hard to switch gears now that I’m in NJ where school just got out and won’t go back until September. I feel “late” to posting this summer reading post, even though the first official day of summer was only last week. Better late than never regardless, right?

I thought I’d share some of my recommendations for summer reading (books I’ve already read and loved)– and also some books I have been looking forward to myself. I’d also love to crowdsource some more ideas… let me know what you’ve read and are planning to read, too.

FOR THE ULTIMATE BEACH READ:

The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

IF YOU SEEK SOME CREATIVE INSPIRATION:

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

A BREEZY ROM-COM TO READ POOLSIDE:

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

THE PERFECT MIX OF HUMOROUS AND HEARTFELT:

The Guncle by Steven Rowley

A CAN’T PUT DOWN NON-FICTION:

Cultish by Amanda Montell

SWAP YOUR MAGAZINES FOR THIS JUICY CELEBRITY MEMOIR:

Open Book by Jessica Simpson

A STEAMY PAGE-TURNER:

The Idea of You by Robinne Lee

IF YOU WANT TO READ SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMARTER:

Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman

WHAT I’M PLANNING ON READING:

The Hotel Nantucket  by Elin Hilderbrand

Rivals by Katharine McGee

Cover Story by Susan Rigetti

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

Thanks for these!I wish you would link to smaller, independent bookstores (women owned, BIPOC owned, etc) to spread some love and financial support to them in tough times.

I’ve read 4 out of the 5 you plan this summer! Great picks! The only one I haven’t read is the kids quotient but know that’s on my list too 🙂 Loved the new Elin book and cover story was wild!!

Unfortunately I didn’t love The Guncle (wonder if I’m the only one??) The queer stereotypes felt a little too forced for me (and I identify as queer) :/
Reading through some of Joan Didion’s works this summer! Never got around to most of them but her death really inspired me that it was time!

I moved from GA to MA and was so confused when everyone kept telling me August was peak summer up here, because I was so used to being back in school the first week of August lol so I feel you.

I just finished Hotel Nantucket and really enjoyed it! Now currently reading The Guncle. I’d also rec Emily Henry’s new book Book Lovers, an oldie-but-goodie The Blue Bistro from Elin Hilderbrand and Finlay Donovan is Killing It. Next on my list is Lost Summers of Newport.

Highly recommend Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. All of her books are fantastic-this one was my favorite.
