I have been semi-expecting this rollercoaster to feel easier, but it’s not exactly. I will say I am having more days that feel “normal” (as in I’ve adjusted to the new normal), but the lows are worse. I thought things opening back up would help but it really hasn’t, for me at least. It’s so strange to watch other parts of the country open up and be in a completely different environment. It’s almost like getting whiplash or something. I’d say half of my Facebook friends live in Florida since that’s where I went to high school and my family lives there so there is a stark difference on what’s happening there and what’s happening here. And then things are ~slowly~ starting to open up here in New Jersey, but I am finding that there’s a lot of grey area and a lot of things are up for interpretation, which I get since there’s still a lot of unknowns about risk and what’s going to happen next.
Anyway, I thought I’d do a fun little post today asking (and answering myself) a bunch of questions to kind of check in with you guys. I have been so unbelievably grateful for this community. For those who read here, comment, send me DMs/emails, and/or contribute in our Facebook group. It’s been so nice to have an online community with you all 🥰 Definitely a bright spot.
What’s something you’re looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to being done with Invisalign. I’m getting close… I only have two more trays, but I have a feeling it’s going to be extended longer. Two of my teeth I think are going to have to be brought down somehow… we’ll see! I started this process the same week Mike and I went into quarantine… and it’s been a very bizarre way to track the pacing of time.
What’s the best book you’ve read this year so far?
It’s a tie. I just finished All Adults Here and really loved it!! Will share more this weekend when I do my monthly reading recap, but in the meantime… highly recommend, especially if you’ve liked Emma Straub’s other books. And I LOVED Such A Fun Age.
Have you learned how to do anything new recently?
Thanks to Youtube, I learned how to sew a zipper. I have been avoiding projects that required a zipper and finally just went for it. It wasn’t as bad as I was thinking, though I have plenty of room for improvement. Now that I’ve done it, it’s opened up a whole new world of projects I can complete.
What are you watching lately?
So I just started rewatching Brothers and Sisters. My mom and I watched it one summer together and we were hooked. It’s been long enough that I can’t remember the details but it’s been nice to revisit the show. It’s an ALL-STAR CAST.

Just picked up on season 4 of the West Wing where my husband left off years and years ago (and I had seen a lot of the first few seasons). Matthew Perry was the special guest and we were shocked how suspenseful it was! I’m actually looking forward to watching it! Aaron Sorkin is a creative genius.

They Were Her Property -Stephanie Jones-Rogers. It’s always timely, but especially now. It really shows the role of white female slaveowners in creating and upholding slavery and it explains so much about today. It’s fantastic writing, very well grounded in academia, yet so accessible. There’s a audiobook version as well. I have learned so much!

I am totally with you on the weirdness of how differently states are handling things. Here in CT we are firmly still at home and I am shocked at how carefree everyone looks online. Indoors, no masks, at bars!! I have had to hide a few friends on my social media because it has been really anxiety inducing for me and I want to still love them at the end of this 🙂 haha

Do you have a favorite new-to-you Instagram account?
Halfbaked Harvest, I had heard of her before but now I love getting inspired by her cooking Instagram stories. And also Grace Atwood which you know ha and Liz Adams!
First, a note on opening up. This is a weird and strange time, but be grateful you live in a state taking the entire situation super seriously and going above and beyond. (I know you are.) I’m in TN, and let’s just say…the response hasn’t been great. My city ended Phase 1 early and now we’ve had a “statistically significant increase” in cases every day this week. We’ve not been a hot spot by any means, and have only have 300+ cases total in my city, but it’s very hard and stressful when everyone around you is acting like it’s “life as normal” and I’m sitting in a mask (one of the very few wearing them) just wanting to protect those around me.
What’s something you’re looking forward to? seeing my mom – she lives an hour away but we’ve not been able to see her since mid-March.

🤷🏻♀️
Hey Rachel – with you. I’m in Nashville (you too?) and I am just super confused by what is happening here.
Elizabeth – I’m in Knoxville, which had had less cases but I feel like had done and even worse job handling things. It’s so frustrating.
I can totally relate. In Germany we now have news about reopening gyms, restaurants, shops, hotels on a daily basis now and all that I keep thinking is: STOP, we´re moving way too fast! The case numbers we have now are the cases from 2 weeks ago, so why don´t we just start with opening restaurants and then wait for the effect on the case numbers for two weeks? Governors seem to compete and everyone wants his state or county to get “back to normal” first. I am really anxious right now since a lot of people behave really irresponsible and new hotspots start to emerge. I felt way safer during the real lockdown, when people took this seriously.
Love this idea and getting a peek into your everyday! Here’s mine:

I just finished The Great and it was so fresh and good. The one sleeper I try to recommend to everyone is The Durrells in Corfu. It will take you away to a lovely Greecian island circa 1945! True story. Can’t recommend it enough!!

What’s something you’re looking forward to?
This is probably a polarizing answer, but getting back to my office full-time. I see you got Ham groomed! He looks so nice. I have been tracking the time of the lockdown in a funny way. My daughter gave me an expensive bottle of hair conditioner that week to try because she didn’t like it. I have been using it since then wanting our world to be better before it runs out. It’s become a “thing” for me also because I tend to ditch shampoo or conditioner quickly and I have been committed to this one to track the time. Funny things we do!
