I WROTE A BOOK!!! Feels so good to be able to officially say that out loud!!!

It’s been such a whirlwind of a timeline that sometimes I can’t believe it’s actually real. But it is! The timing was especially wild (and special) because I signed the book deal right before I found out I was pregnant. It feels so special to me that my baby has been “with” me through every step of writing this book. And he’ll be here, in my arms, when it comes out this November!

The book is called Business Minded and it marries two of my personal passions: business and wellness.

The book is split, half about business, half about wellness, and features interviews with successful entrepreneurs and interactive workbook pages. It was important to me that readers see just how many ways there are to run a successful business; it’s not a one-size fits all. And I wanted there to be concrete takeaways to help build your confidence for starting a business.

In a lot of ways, the book is a culmination of the past decade or so of my life. I was enrolled in and graduated from the undergraduate business school at Georgetown University and really struggled at the beginning to wrap my head around all the business concepts. At times it felt like learning a whole new language! My first semester was during the 2008 financial crisis and so I had a front row seat to the school shifting its entire focus from investment baking to entrepreneurship over the next four years. I happened to inadvertently start my business while I was a student (I officially incorporated in 2011 and graduated in 2012) and it all started to click for me. Honestly my biggest thought was… people shouldn’t be afraid to start a business. If I could start one before I had even graduated school, anyone could.

The second part of the book (the “Minded” section) came about five or so years later.

I found myself absolutely burnt out, physically and mentally. I had been swept up in the Pinterest-driven “#hustle” culture and it finally caught up with me. Then I had this epiphany, after hitting a rock bottom, that I could not live that way anymore. I made a conscious decision to scale back to focus on myself (and my business, but to not forget about myself!).

I slept more. And I started meditating. I started working out. I did this thinking that I’d be hurting my business by not focusing all of my energy on it, but I also knew I needed a lifestyle change and my health was worth it to take my business “down a peg” in my priority list. The biggest surprise to me was that this lifestyle change didn’t hurt my business at all…. in fact, my business BENEFITED from me being in a better place mentally and physically.

It was the greatest lesson: as an entrepreneur, you are your business’s greatest asset.
