I totally didn’t realize that the Fourth of July fell on a Friday… until Thursday. And I totally forgot that most people take the day off of work…. until Thursday. So I had an unexpected, but very much welcomed, long weekend. (And I basically took off Thursday afternoon too. Because, well, I felt like it.)
I was worried about being in the city for the Fourth… last year, I went home to Tampa. But I’m kind of exhausted from traveling. Especially now that I have Teddy, I just hate having to leave him behind and I really don’t like flying with him. I did some serious traveling since the beginning of the year, but it’s been terribly nice to just stay put. Weekends in the city during the summer are sacred, in my opinion. (Plus, everyone else flees to the Hamptons– especially on the Upper East Side– so it’s kind of quieter!)
I made Garrett and Matthew come to the Ed Sheeran concert. It’s part of the Today Show summer concert series. Everywhere we read online, it said you’d be fine if you were in line by 6am. Well, we got there at 5am were SO FAR BEHIND. The line was insane. (And frankly, the concert was hard to enjoy after standing in line for so many hours and being squished into these little gates. But we had a blast hanging out with each other, concert or no concert.)
Obviously, we followed up with breakfast at Penelope’s. One of my favorite spots that always has the longest lines so I tend to avoid it. But we wrapped up the Today Show early enough where we didn’t have to wait. So delicious. Plus, they gave us some festive Fourth of July straws. And then we all took the longest naps ever.
We thought it would be a great idea to try to see the fireworks downtown. Miraculously the rain had disappeared and we made the long trek down. Rookie mistake. That’s where everyone goes to see the fireworks. It was fun to see everything going on, but we much preferred the Upper East Side.
After a quick dinner (#burgersandfries), we caught the sunset on the East River and hung out waiting for the fireworks. Pretty low-key up there, just the way we like it! Matthew caught Garrett and me in action taking sunset pictures hahaha.
Saturday was just filled exploring and shopping (and ice cream, of course). Definitely one of the best walking days around the city, even if it was tremendously hot!
And errands and catching up on Sunday. Just in case you thought Teddy didn’t have a good weekend too… here’s a picture of him during one of his many trips to the park. Pure joy!
Looks like you had a great long weekend! Your pics are amazing, as always 🙂 I agree that sometimes it's just so nice to have no plans on a holiday and relax.
Looks like a great way to spend the weekend! Love the pictures!
I spent the holiday weekend in DC, and it was my first time there. I fell in love with the city…and thought of you, too, when I was in Georgetown! But wow, what a neat city. I was lucky enough to experience some of the local things, since I was staying with a friend who lives there. I never knew that "brunching" was such an important thing until now 🙂
Love this, Teddy looks so cute running around. I could never let Howl off his leash, he's rotten. And your sweater is so cute! I want it. Mana Fashion and Happy Things
Thank goodness we’re getting out of town this weekend. I am incredibly sick of this rain!!! Even if it rains while we’re at the beach, it’ll be better than being cooped up in the house.
Sporty Sister is in Spain… I’m so jealous! We’ve been getting the occasional Facebook message. (Mine today: “I had something to tell you, but I don’t remember hahahah”) My parents and I were planning on going to Sarasota for the fourth sans SS. It would be really weird to vacation as an only child, but oh well. We decided to stay in the Long Boat Key Club, pictured above. My parents have been there and love it.
A couple of weeks ago, my best friend in the whole in entire world (since we were 4) texted me and asked what I was doing for the fourth. I told her and she said that her plans cancelled and she had a plane ticket that she needed to refund. YAY!!! Colie is going to be joining us!!! So here’s the deal. We’re taking two cars down to Sarasota tomorrow afternoon. Colie flies in on Saturday, so I’m going to drive back up and get her and then drive back down!
I’m planning my outfits now (think: coverups and bsuits). I just cannot wait!
I’ll be taking a short hiatus while I’m gone, but when I’m thinking there’s going to be a surprise when I get back…. HINT.
Have fun! Somehow my entire family has worked out a way to go on vacation and not take me! They always go on my siblings spring break and I am away at school!
Somehow yesterday felt like a week, last month was last year, and last year was a decade ago… but then time is simultaneously going by so fast too. The past ten weeks have gone by in a blink! Everyone warns you it goes by fast and they’re not wrong…. The days are long but oh how I wish time would slow down a bit? Or that maybe I could bottle up a tiny bit of these precious boys at every stage so I could revisit them down the road 🤍
I have grown to LOVE baby wearing. Not only do I think it’s such a nice and cozy way to bond with baby, it’s also incredibly practical, especially when you have a toddler to keep up with too! The @wildbird aerial carrier was a treat for myself- and I’m so obsessed with it. 👶🏼 Leave a comment “wildbird” and I’ll DM you the color I have as well as my personal review of it (including some troubleshooting tips).
Some top level things I like; - it’s easy to put on! - it’s so, so comfortable (for me AND baby!) - the little flap is seamless and provides extra support while baby naps and privacy when we need/want it
This affordable rechargeable LED lamp is cute and then made even cuter with this wicker lampshade! 💡✨ No cords needed- just charge and place wherever you want. (Will be extra perfect for dining outdoors this summer!) 💫 Comment “lamp” and I’ll send you links to the LED lamp ($38 for a pair!) and the lampshade (available in a few styles- including a darling blue).
Not really in the mood to be in photos right now, but I keep telling myself I’ll want to look back on these moments and remember them. (Right?!) when I look at these photos in 10, 20, 30 years…
I hope I remember Jack “rescuing” Rory from a windy tent, not how I stood in front of my closet with tears in my eyes.
I hope I remember watching Jack roll down hills and play hop scotch and scoot down the sidewalk with his besties, not that I caught a glimpse of my reflection and didn’t recognize myself.
I hope I remember sitting outside with my friend happily watching our kids play (while watching the minutes until bedtime tick by), and not that I spent too much time zooming in and examining every new wrinkle on my face.
I hope I remember the pure joy of these early warm days with my little family whom I love so much 🤍
The weather is warming up and I’m feeling slightly more comfortable in my skin every day ☀️ Here’s what I wore last week as a mom of two. I have a two and a half year old toddler and a two month old so I need outfits I feel good in, can chase a little guy around in, AND that I can breastfeed easily while wearing. 🔗 Leave a comment with “OUTFITS” to get links to every outfit I wore!
This room is so very special 🤍 The little cars sprinkled everywhere (watch your step!). A tiny sock, never two, peeled off and tucked somewhere hidden away. Piles of books that grow almost as quickly as the little boy who sleeps here. Outgrown pants and shoes to grow into mingling in the closet. Often messy, and a little cluttered, but a little boy lives here. 🚘☀️🐶📚🧸
(Rory is still in our room, but eventually the boys will share. I can picture their little twin beds already!)
About ten days ago, I noticed that today’s forecast was looking WARM. I told Mike, “We’re walking into town and sitting outside and I’m getting a beer. Put it on your calendar.” It ended up being warmer than forecasted (almost eighty degrees!) and let me tell you, it delivered. Today felt like the beginning of The Season™: dinners al fresco, beers/fries/ice creams, and late bedtimes. Indulging in it all because the kids are only getting older and we’re the grownups (somehow) and we get to make the rules ✌🏻

@pennylinndesigns and I hosted a “learn to needlepoint” class this past weekend and it was everything ✨ Needlepoint has been such a bright spot in my life over the past five years- and it’s gotten me through some difficult times. Because it’s helped me so much, sharing this hobby with others has turned into a mini life mission of mine. To sit in a room (my beautiful office space designed by @clare.sull!) with pro stitchers and needlepoint newbies alike was one of my dreams come true. I loved seeing women chatting, meeting, and bonding over this beautiful craft 🪡 Honestly, the needlepoint world is (sadly) filled with a lot of gatekeeping and competitiveness; this weekend proved that it doesn’t have to- and shouldn’t- be this way! It’s for EVERYONE. Whether you’ve never picked up a canvas in your life or you’re working on heirloom stockings for your family, there’s room for everyone at this table.
📍 Leave a comment saying “needlepoint” and I’ll send you my go-to resources for getting started with needlepoint!
Glad you had a great weekend! Gorgeous pics, love the scenery!
