My Skincare Routine, Featuring Head & Shoulders

I’m partnering with my favorite haircare brand Head & Shoulders again for today’s post. By now, you know how much I swear by Head & Shoulders. It’s my favorite everyday shampoo and conditioner because it keeps my scalp healthy and hair silky smooth. I’ve tried other shampoos in the past (from other drugstore brands to fancy custom formulas that cost an arm and a leg) and, yet, I always return to my trusty Head & Shoulders.

Head and Shoulders Shampoo

Even though it’s a brand that I use on a nearly everyday basis, I’ve still learned so much from working directly with the brand. I started to use it because it simply works, but now I know even more and want to pass the tips along to you. For the last post, I learned that using the Head & Shoulders conditioner in addition to the shampoo is critical because another cosmetic conditioner can actually wash away up to 70% of the dandruff-fighting ingredients. I have to confess that I had been usually skipping the conditioner altogether partly out of laziness and partly because I had this idea that conditioner would leave my hair too poofy or fluffy. Now I’m following my shampoo with the conditioner and I cannot believe how smooth my hair is now. I can blow dry my hair and not need to use a single hair product to achieve silky locks.

When I read the creative brief for this post, my mind was blown. It’s such a simple concept, but it’s one that I had truly never thought of or considered. Your scalp is the same as the skin on your face; I guess in my mind I see the hairline and considered it to be a different element altogether. But your scalp is a continuation of the skin from your face and should be treated as such! I had no idea, but your scalp can actually show signs of aging especially due to damage from scalp issues like flaking and dryness which can lead to breakage and dullness in hair.

Mind blown, right?

Head and Shoulders Scalp Care

Head & Shoulders Review

But it makes sense when I thought about it. I spend a good bit of time every morning and night on my skincare routine. The products I use not only help make my skin look its best now but also ensures it will still look as great in the future. My haircare routine should do the same.

Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky Collection has skin-inspired benefits, which moisturizes, rejuvenates and detoxifies the scalp, creating a healthier foundation for hair to grow. That’s why it’s the first haircare brand to win a Skin Award (Cosmopolitan‘s 2018 Skin Awards).

For these photos, I washed and conditioned my hair with H&S Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner and blew it dry straight. I didn’t use any other hair products or straightening tools… look at that healthy, shiny part!

Do they have a color protecting version? I’ve Googled it, but didn’t come up with anything. I’ve always used H&S when I had issues with my scalp, but not regularly because I spend a pretty penny getting my hair done and I don’t want to shorten the time between salon visits. I’d love to find a H&S version I can use daily that will protect my color, too.

I emailed the H&S team for clarity: “While H&S doesn’t have a collection made specifically for color protection, all of our shampoos and conditioners are gentle enough for daily use and color-treated hair.”

Thanks, Carly! I may have to revisit this product line. I’d love a post on drug store products that are just as good as the makeup counter versions, but don’t cost a fortune. There have to be other girls out there like me who will happily spend hundreds on a scarf but can’t bring themselves to spend more than $10 on mascara.

Totally didn’t know that about following up with the conditioner!

I use Head & Shoulders Shampoo but a different brand conditioner – I’ll have to go out and get their conditioner. Thanks for the tip!

Speaking of your scalp being like your face, you can use H&S shampoo on your face! It can be a little drying, so of course always use a nice moisturizer in your skincare regime.

When I turned 30 last year, suddenly my usually problem-free skin changed. I was breaking out with what seemed like hormonal or stress-induced cystic-like acne around my chin. I tried all kinds of products in a variety of prices – soaps and serums, toners and treatments. Nothing helped. Until I read online about fungal acne. The treatment is the same medication found in H&S. I did a little spot treatment with shampoo like a mask almost. It helped so much! Now, I just use it on my face a few days a week like a face wash and the problem is largely controlled.

Just wanted to share in case anyone is already using H&S and could benefit from a cheap and unlikely skin-saver.

I used H&S during my postpartum periods with both babies because my hair/scalp was SO dry. It worked wonders!! Now that i’m past my PP days, my hair is back to it’s natural state — super (like, super) oily. Do you find that you have to wash your hair more often when using H&S because of it’s moisturizing (which can cause oiliness) quality? I just stopped using it because I just assumed it would make my scalp more oily…may need to revisit the product!

I actually find that I don’t have to wash it as often, mostly because my hair feels “cleaner” longer. I touch up with dry shampoo at my roots in between regular shampooing though.

I grew up in a family full of hairstylists who always advised me against using products such as H&S. As I’ve grown older and purchase my own products, I’ve fallen in love with some drugstore products. Head & Shoulders is one brand that I’ve never actually tried because I was always nervous based on what my family had said in the past. However, this post makes me want to try it. So thank you for sharing and providing some insight on their products!

The timing of me reading this post is so funny! My boyfriend and I recently got to the ‘leaving our bath products of choice at each others houses’ stage so his Head and Shoulders has been in my shower for a couple weeks and I used to totally rag on him for having a delicate scalp because my shampoos were giving him an itchy scalp and I thought I used really gentle stuff (shea moisture, lush). But I gave into curiosity a few days ago and had one of the best hair days in a LONG TIME and then had two more in a row…. Today I used my regular stuff and my hair is not the same! I fear I’ll have to admit out loud I’m wrong when he realizes his shampoo is disappearing twice as fast from me using it!

Great post, Carly! I too love H&S and have been using it since I was a kid. Have you ever considered using their 2-in-1 products so that you’re getting both shampoo and conditioner in at once? When I use mine, I just apply it two times, as if I were doing shampoo and conditioner separately. I feel like this also maximizes the product so you won’t have to worry about your shampoo/conditioner ratio. Let me know what you think!
