RECIPE: Restart Green Smoothie

Louisa from Living Lou is back today with the PERFECT holiday recipe. Not your typical cookie or dinner suggestion, but the recipe you’ll want to have on hand throughout the craziness of the holidays. Now, I went on a juicing spree a while back and got totally derailed when I started to not like my concoctions. Mostly because I had no idea what to do. I love Louis’s “secret” ingredient! Can’t wait to try.

We’re in the thick of it. The Holidays. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite times of the year, but it’s also a time filled with indulgence. Something which I fully support, in moderation. I mean, if there is a time when you should enjoy that extra dessert or another glass of wine, I think that the holiday season is the time for that. Also, let’s not forget about laying in bed all day Netflix binging on Gilmore Girls. Please tell me I’m not alone.
Since I know I will be indulging at this time of year, I like to start my days off on the right foot. With what I like to call a restart green smoothie. Smoothies are one of my favorite easy breakfast options. What I love about this restart green smoothie is that it’s filled with all the goodness of your typical green smoothie, in this case I use spinach but kale also works wonderfully. But of course, I have to put a bit of my own spin on it. I throw in a couple of extra ingredients for some fun, in this case coconut water (just in case you need to replenish those electrolytes), as well as some ginger and cilantro. A little bit of cilantro goes a long way, and this is the secret ingredient that gives this smoothie a huge boost of freshness. No matter how late you stayed out the night before, this smoothie will leave you feeling like you can take on the day! It also makes a great on-the-go breakfast if you’re heading out to battle the crowds for some last minute Christmas shopping.

A couple of tips for your smoothie making:
1. Prepare extra portions and freeze.
I like to chop up double the amount of banana, pineapple, cilantro and ginger and keep them in ziplock bags in my freezer. When I need a quick smoothie in the morning, I just add some greens and the liquid ingredients and it’s ready to go!
2. Experiment!
Often I’ll just buy whatever frozen fruit is on sale at the grocery store and play around with different versions of this smoothie. Frozen mango is a wonderful replacement for the pineapple! You can also add in a scoop of cocoa powder if you’re craving a little chocolate with your breakfast.
Restart Green Smoothie (serves 1)
1 banana, frozen
½ cup chopped pineapple, frozen
2 cups packed fresh spinach (or kale)
½ cup coconut water
⅓ cup Greek yogurt
1 tbsp fresh minced cilantro (parsley would also work)
1 tbsp freshly grated ginger
1 tsp honey (optional)
Directions
In a blender, blend together all ingredients. Serve immediately.

Oh gosh, I already started indulging during exam week. Now that I'm off campus for winter break, it's going to be so hard controlling myself around "real" food!!! Such a simple recipe, thanks! Also, it's festively green 😛 -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's

I love making smoothies for breakfast! I like to find new combinations of ingredients for my drink on the Internet or just experiment with what I have in the fridge. This green smoothie sounds really nice, gotta try it tomorrow!

Btw, putting some banana pieces in a freezer is such a great idea, I used to do it in the summer, while it was hot outside. Now I just add fresh bananas to all my smoothie to create the thicker consistency 😉
